Penile implant surgery is becoming a more acceptable plastic surgical procedure. Whether it is for surgical penile enhancement or for a penile dysfunction such as erectile dysfunction (ED), the procedure has become easier to perform and more successful in achieving beneficial results.
Types of Penile Implant Surgery
Penile Dysfunction
Several medical conditions can cause the penis to lose the ability to become erect. In past years, this was often a depressing condition because it meant the end of a man’s sexual activity. Erectile dysfunction can develop due to medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes or prostate difficulties.
Medications can also cause erectile dysfunction as can prostate surgery. Other conditions such as injury can sometimes cause the loss of the ability to achieve an erection and may invoke the need to have testicular implants as well. The penis is the symbol of manhood just as the breasts are the symbol of womanhood.
Up until the availability of penile implant surgery, ED would often elicit a similar psychological response to women who lose their breasts through breast cancer. Surgical penile implant procedures can restore the ability of men to predictably achieve and sustain an erection allowing for resumed sexual activity.
Though some men with erectile dysfunction may achieve satisfactory results with use of a medication such as Viagra or Levitra or with the use of a vacuum type penis pump, some men will continue to be unable to achieve an erection and are in need of a penile implant.
Penile prosthetics placed for causes of penile dysfunction can be done with cylinders that inflate with air or fluid or with a semi rigid rod placed in the spongy areas of the penis known as the corpus cavernosum. Most men who have penile implant surgery can return to full activity within 6 weeks or so including sexual activity.
Penis Enhancement
Some men are just not happy with the size of their penis. Many men (and women) believe that a large penis is the sign of virility and feel that it is more able to provide sexual fulfillment in a greater measure. For these men, surgical penis augmentation may be an option.
Penile implants done for purposes of enhancement of the penis size will most likely involve tissue transplants. In some cases, fat may be liposuctioned from an area of the body such as the abdomen and inserted as a penile injection. This is known as autologous fat transplant and is often successful at increasing the girth or width of the penis by 20 percent or so.
Other patients may choose to have penis lengthening and width enhancement surgery which may be done using skin and tissue donation from a previously deceased person. This surgery is also often effective at increasing the size of the penis by 15 percent or more.
Whichever reason or type of penis enhancement implant surgery is chosen, one should always make sure that the cosmetic surgeon or urologist who is going to perform the surgery is well qualified and has a great deal of experience in performing the same type of surgery.
