Perfect lips are the desire of many women and as celebrities continue to have lip augmentation procedures, the popularity of plump lips continues to grow. Lip enhancement can be performed by a number of means including: lip surgery, fat injections, collagen injections and hyaluronic acid injections.
Lip Augmentation Surgery
Cosmetic surgery to enhance the lips can be performed to produce the most dramatic results. During plastic lip surgery, implants will be placed through small incisions made at the corners of the mouth. This is done under local anesthesia after injection of an anesthetic such as lidocaine which will wear off shortly after the lip enhancement procedure. Lip implants may be placed using one of the following agents:
–Alloderm is tissue derived from tissue banks after deceased persons have donated their bodies. It is considered to be very safe and effective and is the most popular material for lip augmentation. The Alloderm implant will be incorporated into the natural tissues of the lips and may not be permanent.
–Synthetic tissue such as Gore-Tex or SoftForm are agents used for permanent lip augmentation. The tissue cannot be absorbed by the body as it is synthetic but the patient may experience a risk of rejection because it is foreign material. If rejection or severe infection occurs, this tissue may be removed.
–Fat grafts are implants of fat obtained elsewhere from the patient’s own body. As it is completely natural, there is no risk of infection. Though most of the fat will be populated by blood vessels and remain permanently, some patients may see a gradual loss of a percentage of the lip plumping effect.
–Flap grafts bring tissue from the inside of the mouth and push it into the lips. It may be stitched in place but is much less successful than other methods
Lip Enhancement Injections
Several types of injections may be placed in the lips to enhance the fullness of the mouth. This is a much less invasive, less costly and more popular way to achieve cosmetic lip augmentation. It also carries a much lower risk to the patient and can be done more than once to achieve the exact desired lip fullness. Available types of lip enhancing injections include:
–Collagen injections are usually prepared from animal tissue, usually from cow collagen. It will usually only last a few months and may cause an allergic reaction. Dermalogen involves the preparation of collagen injections from donor tissue of a deceased person.
Autologous collagen can be made from a person’s own excess skin and injected but this requires removal of skin and is only performed in cases where skin from a cosmetic surgical lift procedure is available to be processed. Autologous collagen injections tend to last much longer and do not provoke allergic reactions.
–Fat injections can be prepared from fat cells that have been removed from other parts of the body by liposuction. Fat injections for lip enhancement will last longer than collagen but may eventually need to be repeated but there is no chance for a rejection or allergy.
–Hyaluronic acid is a tissue substance that exists in many parts of the body. It forms part of the matrix structure of cartilage and connective tissue and provides support to skin and other tissues. It is naturally lost through aging and hyaluronic acid lip injections may replace the lost substance and provide enhancement for fuller lips.
It may be obtained from human donor tissue as the product HylaForm or synthetically as the products Restylane and Juvederm. As with most other injectable fillers, it is not a permanent lip augmentation and may have to be repeated.
Cosmetic lip augmentation can increase self esteem by providing one with a beautiful, sensual mouth. It is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedures and almost always produces positive results.
