Vaginal rejuvenation procedures are growing in popularity as with the advent of new technology, women decide they don’t have to put up with the loosening of vaginal tissues that their mothers and grandmothers did.
In years past, though rarely talked about, it was known that vaginal tissues stretched and became looser after childbirth. Women (and men) alike had to simply endure this natural development of aging. For many women (and their partners) this resulted in a loss of sexual enjoyment and intimacy.
The problem may even worsen as women approach menopause and deal with additional circumstances such as loss of libido and vaginal dryness. Vaginal tightening surgery can reduce the problems that occur after childbirth and due to the natural processes of aging.
Vaginoplasty used to be performed mostly to correct vaginal abnormalities due to injury, cancer or birth defects or in the much rarer case, to construct a vagina in the case of male-to-female gender reassignment surgery. This is no longer true as vaginal reconstruction can be and is more commonly performed today to correct natures “work”
Today procedures vaginal plastic surgery procedures can be performed on the clitoris in the case of a hooded clitoris, on the labia in the case of a labia that is considered to be too large, on the perineum in cases of a relaxation of the muscle between anus and the vagina and on the hymen as “revirgination” but many of the vagina restoration procedures involve overall tightening of the vagina itself. There are two basic methods to basic vaginal rejuvenation – laser vaginal tightening and surgical vaginal tightening.
Laser vaginal rejuvenation involves the use a highly specialized, focused light to reduce old, sagging tissue and stimulate new healthy supportive tissue growth in and around the walls of the vagina. It can also help to shrink a labia that is too large or stretched out.
It can effectively tighten the muscles and tissues of the vagina and reduce the overall diameter, increasing sexual gratification for both the woman and her partner. Many women also get relief from symptoms of pelvic relaxation such as urinary incontinence. Laser vaginal procedures may sometimes be performed under local anesthesia, but may require the use of IV sedation.
Vaginal restoration surgery, while occasional combined with the use of the laser, is performed to remove excess tissue and skin that has stretched. Surgical incisions will be made in the appropriate areas, skin and tissue will be removed and the vaginal tissue will be carefully tightened and sutured into place using methods designed to reduce scarring. Vaginal plastic surgery will often require the use of general anesthesia as it is a major surgical procedure.
Recovery from either type of vaginal rejuvenation will require several days of rest and light activity. Sterile bandaging and absorbent packing will be used to eliminate fluid seepage that may occur after the procedure. Most women are able to walk normally within a few days and may be able to return to full sexual activity within 6 to 8 weeks.
No matter what type of vaginal rejuvenation procedure you are considering, it is important to select the right cosmetic surgeon. A board certified plastic surgeon who is experienced at performing the type of procedure you are considering will be your best bet.
You should select one who is able to thoroughly explain the procedure and recovery time and who will be able to give you a realistic idea of what to expect, ideally he or she will be able to show you a number of before and after vaginal surgery photos of previous patients that he has worked on.
Ensuring that you select the right physician and that you carefully follow post surgical instructions will provide the opportunity for the maximum benefit from vaginal rejuvenation.
